English Reading

At Whittonstall and Broomley First Schools we start teaching phonics in Nursery/Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school.

Reading Curriculum

English Writing

At Broomley we want our children to become articulate and imaginative communicators and enthusiastic and engaged writers. Our curriculum strives to make writing interesting and exciting and provide a range of writing opportunities both in English lessons and across the curriculum. Our writing units start with a book or film hook and provide a real purpose for writing which piques imagination and creativity. Teachers use both ‘talk for writing’ approaches and The Literacy Shed to bring learning to life. By giving children the context to learning and providing opportunities to write in all aspects of the curriculum, we hope children understand the value of writing now and in their futures.
