Autumn 1
This half term our Creative Curriculum topic is ‘Fire and Ice’. We have been looking at the Great Fire of London, Guy Fawkes and the race to the Antarctic. In our reading and writing lessons, we have looked at a range of fiction and non-fiction pieces linked to our topic. Year 2 have been completing some amazing sentence stacking work.
Into the woods! Year 2 have taken part in Forest School sessions in Glebe Woods where they have continued to embed their WILD Passport skills which include nature, fire, rope, shelter and woodcraft. To support and embed learning within the ‘Fire and Ice’ topic we have focused on the use of fire and how to make fire safely. Children have demonstrated contextualised risk assessment in the woods.
In Maths, year 2 have been working on place value to 100. We have enjoyed exploring this topic through a range of games and using concrete resources for understanding. In Phonics we have been working on alternative spellings. Year 2 have had lots of fun with our spelling bee activities.
This term we had French day in school. The children looked at Landmarks, artists and food associated to France.
Autumn 2
This half term our Creative Curriculum topic is ‘The Big Wide World’. We have been learning about the location of countries, continents and oceans of the world in relation to the position of the UK and our own locality. We have developed a global awareness by looking at the position of the 7 continents and 5 oceans, journey lines, map reading skills and using aerial photographs to recognise human and physical features including landmarks
In our reading and writing lessons this term our work focused around many books including The Building Boy, Proudest Blue and Meerkat Christmas. Our writing units were postcard writing and a narrative piece.
In Maths, year 2 have been working on addition and subtraction and money.
This term we had Interfaith Week in school. Inter Faith Week is a chance to promote community cohesion and gain a deeper understanding of all members of our society. This week helped to contribute towards the spiritual, moral and social development of the children in Broomley First School. The children told stories, took part in a cooking class making Jewish Boureka, and created places of worship during our sculpting unit. We looked at beliefs practices and common misconceptions surrounding world faiths.
Spring 1 & 2
This term our Creative Curriculum topic is ‘Exploring Air and Space Travel’. We have looked at how air and space travel has developed over time. The children researched significant individuals in history Mae Jemison, Amelia Earhart and Elon Musk to name a few. Finally Year 2 had an amazing workshop with Kielder Observatory.
In our reading and writing lessons we have looked at The Skies Above My Eyes, Stardust and The Day The Crayons Quit with a focus on using our VIPRS skills when working through texts. In our writing lessons we have worked on letter and story writing.
In our Art units this term we studied the work of Beth Krommes and Wassily Kandinsky through viewing their work, engaging in discussions and through story. We have developed the way we mark make, using drawing and painting tools. Year 2 have a new set of vocabulary to take into our next unit.
In Maths, year 2 have covered the units of Multiplication and division, Statistics and shape.
This term we had STEM week. The theme of the week was ‘growth’. Throughout the day the children rotated around the following activities: Growing and planting, Olfactory, Building (Engineering), Measurement and a visit from Sublime Science.
